Alvarado Junior High students took the top three spots in the Patriot’s Pen essay contest hosted by the Alvarado Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The theme for this year’s contest, which is for any 6th-8th grader, was ‘The America I Believe In’. The local chapter of the VFW awards prize money to the local winners, who are then eligible to compete in a national contest.
This year’s first place winner was eighth grader Savannah Davis, who won $100. Eighth grader Hagan Magee took second place and $75 while seventh grader Faith Bates took third place and $50.
The VFW also has a Teacher of the Year contest which will announced next month, a Voice of Democracy contest for local high school students, and an art contest.
