For the sixth time in the last eight years, the Lady Indian volleyball team earned a berth in the state playoffs after a fourth-place finish in District 17-4A.

The Lady Indians’ play on the court did not go unnoticed by other district coaches as two players earned district superlatives and three others were named to the first or second team all-district.

“We were a very young team this year,” head coach Jill Barkey said. “To have the senior leadership get recognized is great, especially since we ended up in fourth place. They will be very big shoes to fill.

“As for the underclassmen, Jaiden and Abby, I just can’t wait for the next couple of years for them. They are going to make an even bigger impact on this team in the future. It’s exciting to think about!”

Freshman Jaiden Wright was named the district’s Newcomer of the Year after totaling nine aces, 55 kills and 16 blocks during district play.

A second superlative went to senior Erica Benegas, who was named the district’s Server of the Year. Benegas led the Lady Indians with 17 aces and 150 assists while also collecting 58 digs.

This was the second year in a row a Lady Indian player was named the district’s top server.

Earning first team all-district honors was senior Miranda Roberts, who finished with nine aces, 86 kills, 87 assists and 71 digs.

Second team selections were senior Alysia Torres who had six aces and 67 digs, and sophomore Abby Tatum, who finished the year with nine aces, 12 kills and 56 digs during district play.

Sophomore Jacey Power was an honorable mention selection after compiling four aces, 37 kills, seven blocks and 22 digs.
