The U.S. Department of Education named Alvarado Elementary South a 2020 National Blue Ribbon School, the nation’s top honor for individual campuses based on academic achievement.

The coveted award is the first for an Alvarado ISD campus.

“We could not be more excited or proud of AES, AISD, and the entire Alvarado community,” said. Dr. Kenneth Estes, Alvarado ISD Superintendent. “National Blue Ribbon School is difficult to achieve and demonstrates the academic excellence that exists in our community.”

The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in achievement gaps in student subgroups.

“We are humbled and honored to receive this national award,” former principal Karla Moore said. “It is a testament of the hard work and dedication of our campus educators, our scholars, and stakeholders. It is an exciting accomplishment for me as well. I began my career at Alvarado Elementary South 24 years ago as a teacher and have great pride and respect for this campus.

“AES earned this great honor for the category of closing the gaps, and our district is focused on educating all children and strives for success and high standards.”

Moore was principal at AES until this summer when she transitioned into the role of the district’s coordinator of language arts and bilingual instruction.

Only 26 schools from across Texas and 367 across the nation received the recognition this year. In its 38th year, the National Blue Ribbons School program has recognized more than 9,000 schools across the nation.
